Topamax Birth Defects

Topamax Lawsuit InformationThe makers of Topamax had an obligation to provide their consumers with a reasonable level of safety, but as we have seen with countless manufacturers across the world, the temptation to speed along prescriptions has resulted in inadequate research.

Topamax (topiramate) is a medication designed to treat adults and children who experience certain types of seizures as well as prevent headaches in adults. Topamax has been shown to increase the rate of oral cleft birth defects from 0.07% to 1.4%.

Topamax Birth Defects

Topamax Birth Defects are devastating and widespread. The FDA has issued warnings to help prevent the use of Topamax by pregnant women, but not all women have been properly informed of the dangers involved until after their child is born unhealthy. The use of Topamax has left many women devastated seeing their child born with birth defects including:

  • Cleft Lip
  • Cleft Palate

The FDA has listed Topamax as a Category D medication, but the information comes long after many women had already taken enough Topamax to scar their child for life. Johnson and Johnson, Topamax manufacturers, took a huge blow from mothers everywhere after failing to study their own medication enough to warn their users of its potential dangers. Johnson and Johnson has since updated their warning labels to inform pregnant women of its dangerous propensity.

Holding Topamax Manufacturers Responsible

Holding wrongdoers accountable against negligent manufacturers and forcing them to pay large verdicts and settlements to victims may make necessary adjustments in the future to help prevent repeating their careless mistakes. We feel that the hundreds of millions of dollars that we have already obtained for our clients has helped prevent future defects and has helped save lives.
