Temecula Car Accidents Caused By Dangerous Roads
In the last decade, Temecula in Riverside County, California, has grown in people, cars and traffic, the result of its notoriety as a destination community for wine festivals and other activities like hot air ballooning. Regrettably, this growth has resulted in an increase in car accidents. Many attribute Temecula's car collisions to the city's hazardous roads.
Last year, a Temecula man was killed when he was struck by an SUV while jogging on Redhawk Parkway while trying to cross Via Cordoba. This troublesome intersection has long suffered from high traffic speeds (the posted speed limit is 45 mph, but drivers often go faster) and poor visibility. In addition, the intersection is situated so as to force drivers to accelerate rapidly when attempting to turn left. Since January 2007, three more accidents have occurred at this intersection, including one where a car turned left from Via Cordoba. While there is no crosswalk here, it is legal to cross at the intersection, even though pedestrians must yield to traffic.
"Intersections like these require special attention from both a traffic enforcement and traffic engineering standpoint," noted John Bisnar. "Officials should consider a traffic light at this location and speeders should be cited."
Also troubling is Winchester Road where two people--in two separate car crashes--lost their lives in January 2001. According to Temecula police, there were more than 100 crashes along a seven mile section of Winchester Road from 1999 to 2001. The California Highway Patrol reported that the majority of motor vehicle accidents along Winchester Road took place where the road merges into a single lane in both directions. Sadly, Winchester Road traffic deaths have continued long past 2001.
Adding to these tragedies are the statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These revealed that 16 people died in Temecula car accidents between 2001 and 2003. More recently, in 2006, the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) reported seven fatalities and 420 injuries in city car accidents. DUI collisions took four lives and injured 36. A total of 12 motorcyclists were injured. One pedestrian was killed and seven were injured in traffic accidents. Last year, in March, there were 136 car accidents in the city.
Determined to reduce the number of car collisions, fatalities and injuries in the city, Temecula Police cited 1,894 drivers and made 67 DUI arrests in March 2008. DUI checkpoints were also in play, helping to get drunks and problem vehicles off city streets. At a recent DUI checkpoint at Winchester Road and Nicholas Road, 40 drivers were cited for various traffic violations, four DUI arrests were made, and 13 cars were impounded.
