Exercise Caution When Using Hotel Swimming Pools

When it comes to staying in a hotel, one of the most popular features that travelers tend to look for is whether the place has a pool. This is especially true if it is a family traveling with children. After all, a pool usually provides a good way for the kids to burn off some energy after being on the road for so many hours. Families are usually even willing to pay a little more for the hotel charge if they know they will be getting the use of a pool.

However, families staying at hotels should be proactive in exercising caution when using the hotel swimming pools. California personal injury attorneys receive many complaints each year regarding swimming pool accidents. Adults run the risk of being hurt in or near swimming pools; research shows that alcohol is often involved. But it is a different story when dealing with children who get injured in swimming pools.

Swimming pools can be an especially dangerous place for children. Each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every four drowning victims in America is a child under the age of 14. Yet death as a result of the swimming pool accident is not always the outcome. Many other children suffer life-altering injuries, such as neck and spine injuries, and even cases of disembowelment due to pools lacking a drain cover.

According to most California personal injury attorneys, the main problems that travelers should be aware of while using hotel pools, include:

  1. defective equipment, including the diving board and hand rails
  2. improper use of chemicals in the pool
  3. failure to address safety hazards in and around the pool area
  4. not having proper fencing and barriers in place around the pool

In addition, there are proper steps that pool keepers should take if someone happens to defecate in the swimming pool. Not taking these measures could lead other swimmers to get sick.

Another major area of concern, when it comes to children being in the pools, is drain covers. The drains are so dangerous for children that, in 2008, the federal government passed legislation to require that there be anti-entrapment drain covers in place. The problem is, there are places that do not keep up on this requirement, or the anti-entrapment drain cover may be broken or missing, thus creating a potentially hazardous situation.

If you or someone in your family suffers from a swimming pool accident, you should speak with a California personal injury attorney to see what your options are. Swimming pools at hotels and other public areas may be a lot of fun, but they can also be a recipe for disaster if proper safety measures are not observed.
