Simi Valley Car Accidents Reduced Using "Tattle Tell" System
Simi Valley car accident lawyers know that the city is one of the nation's safest metropolitan cities. The FBI reports 938 Simi Valley car collisions in 2005, and 573 of those reported no injuries. While this was the city's lowest car crash rate in two decades, the city nonetheless does have its share of car accidents.
Last year, a car crash killed a woman and injured four people at the intersection of Katherine Road and Kuehner Drive. One nearby resident indicated that motorists drive too fast on Kuehner Drive and said it was an unsafe road.
"Driving too fast is a major cause of many car collisions that kill or injure many millions of people every year," noted John Bisnar.
Simi Valley suffered a number of car accidents as reported by the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In 2006, there were nine fatalities due to Simi Valley car crashes and 462 injuries. DUI accidents were responsible for four deaths and 51 injuries. Twenty pedestrians were injured in auto collisions. And motorcycle accidents injured 13.
Often to blame in many of these car accidents are motorists who run red lights. Simi Valley Police reports showed that 60% of city traffic accidents were caused by red-light or right-of-way violations. To nab red-light runners, Simi Valley recently installed blue lights, called "tattle-tells," on traffic signals at some of its more accident-prone intersections. The blue lights, which are located on the opposite side of the traffic signal, light up when the traffic signal turns red. Officers on the other side of the intersection don't have to wade through cross traffic to catch the catch the violators. It's safer for everyone.
Simi Valley installed the tattle tells at high-traffic intersections where drivers often run red lights during months when kids are in school. Tattle tells are now up at the many intersections.
"Catching red-light runners can prevent one of the major causes of car accidents," said John Bisnar. "Municipalities should seriously consider using signal monitoring systems like the tattle tell to help safeguard its traffic officers."
