Santa Ana's Most Dangerous Intersections

Santa Ana's news is usually centered on crime rates, but the Orange County Transportation Authority has moved the press in a different direction: Santa Ana now has three spots on the list of Orange County's busiest intersections.

Santa Ana, the county seat and most populous city of Orange County, is the 4th most densely populated city in the United States behind New York City, San Francisco and Chicago, according to the 2000 census. At least 12,471.5 people reside in each square mile, a very high number that explains why such a relatively small city has such a wide range of personal injury accidents and high crime rates.

Harbor and 1st Street

Car accidents on Harbor and 1st street are not uncommon. In September of 2010, police arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter on Harbor Boulevard.

Cook was apparently speeding south on Harbor Boulevard and possibly ran a red light, before he lost control of his Toyota Scion. The vehicle struck Aguilar, who was walking home from work, and she was instantly killed. Cook is facing a number of criminal charges.

Harbor Blvd and 1st Street

An average of 83,200 vehicles a day travel through Harbor Boulevard and First Street, according to the Orange County Transportation Authority.

California law does not take kindly to drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A driver whose act of driving under the influence results in the death of another will likely face vehicular manslaughter charges. California Penal Code Section 191.5 (a) states: "Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated is the unlawful killing of a human being without malice aforethought, in the driving of a vehicle, where the driving was in violation of Section 23140, 23152, or 23153 of the Vehicle Code, and the killing was either the proximate result of the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to a felony, and with gross negligence, or the proximate result of the commission of a lawful act that might produce death, in an unlawful manner, and with gross negligence."

Bristol and 17th Street

Bristol Ave and 17th Street

Due to Bristol's high flow of traffic, it is no surprise that there are an increased number of car accidents in this area. One person was injured in a Santa Ana car accident after a 35-year-old female driver hit a strip mall building in April of 2010. According to a news report in the Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred the morning of April 7, 2010, in the 1200 block of South Bristol Street. Santa Ana police said the driver of a Ford Crown Victoria plowed into a nail salon and hit an employee, as she was trying to park her car.

Based on this news report, it is painfully obvious that the driver was completely unaware of her surroundings or what she was doing at the time. Was she under the influence? Was she doing something other than driving such as talking on the phone? The facts were never given, but the result is still the same: an employee of a nail salon is going to have a hard time feeling comfortable working under any conditions. An average of 82,300 vehicles pass through this intersection a day.
