Children Most Vulnerable In San Fernando Valley Car Accidents

San Fernando Valley is one of southern California's most urbanized areas. Any San Fernando Valley personal injury lawyer will tell you that this means more car, train and pedestrian accidents to worry about.

Safety officials say that many victims of car accidents in the San Fernando Valley include children, especially as summer ends and thousands of students return to the city's many schools. According to safety officials, 25 to 30 children are injured in San Fernando Valley car accidents near schools every year. While the numbers may seem low, the death of any child while on the way to school is one too many.

Safety officials attribute this to many parents overestimating their kids' ability to handle themselves on streets. Studies show that children ages 5 to 9 are the most vulnerable to personal injuries and death as a result of car accidents. Experts say that children cannot easily judge a car's speed and distance and assume that if they can see a car, then the driver must be able to see them. Studies also show that elementary school aged children can get killed by vehicles going up to 25 mph. San Fernando Valley officials have taken this into consideration when posting speed limits around schools. Local police say that San Fernando Valley has the worst record when it comes to speeding-related car accidents.

Most Personal Injuries Occur On 20 San Fernando Valley Streets

Aside from roads near schools, San Fernando Valley personal injury attorneys are also disturbed to find that a high proportion of car and pedestrian accidents seem to take place in select areas of the suburb. Recent studies showed that in the last three years, at least 90 people have been killed on jus 20 San Fernando Valley Streets.

These most dangerous streets include Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Burbank Boulevard and Nordhoff Street. Police officials reported that Laurel Canyon saw 11 deaths while Burbank had 10 fatal car collisions. Nordhoff street, on the other hand, had seven fatalities.

San Fernando Valley officials have taken the statistics into consideration and are taking the appropriate measures to make the city's streets safer. For example, motorcycle officers are equipped with laser-sensor devices which they say are more effective than radar guns in apprehending speeding drivers. They have even gone undercover to arrest reckless drivers in areas where pedestrian signs are clearly visible.

San Fernando Valley Home To Some Of The Most Dangerous Train Crossings

If one wanted to avoid these dangerous streets by taking the Metrolink train, one should also know that San Fernando Valley has two of the Metrolink's most dangerous crossings. Safety experts identified these areas as Buena Vista Street in Burbank and Sunland Boulevard in Sun Valley.

In January 2003, two people were killed when a man's vehicle was struck by a Metrolink train traveling 79 mph. Two train cars were also derailed and 20 other Metrolink riders were injured in the train accident. In January 2006, a 76-year-old lady was killed after her car was hit by a Metrolink train going 75 mph. The woman's car was dragged a third of a mile before the train could stop.
