Public voting plays a vital role in each student's chance of earning the scholarship and is strongly encouraged. By visiting the Viral Video Film Contest webpage and voting for the best video, not only will the public's awareness of the problem be raised, but voters will also directly contribute to the finalists' chance of winning the grand prize and earning funds to help them further their education.

Western Region Winner, Mike Rafalik, Portrays How Easily a Life can be Taken by a Distracted Driver in, "Life Can Change in an Instant"

His heartfelt video shines light on the tragedies that happen when drivers are distracted. With today's technology and peoples' hustle-and-bustle lifestyle, raising public knowledge of distracted driving is crucial to helping end it.

Mike's efforts to help bring distracted driving to a halt have awarded him the Western Region Winner and prize of a $1,500 school scholarship presented by Personal Injury Attorneys and Distracted Driving Viral Video Contest supporters Bisnar | Chase Personal Injury Attorneys, LLP.

Viral Videos Generate Public Exposure to a Concerning Matter

Distracted driving has become a wide spread occurrence and drivers are now less aware of the road and more preoccupied with texting, talking on cell phones, eating, drinking, changing the radio station, using a navigation system, grooming or talking to passengers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distraction as a specific type of inattention that occurs when drivers divert their attention away from the task of driving to focus on another activity instead.

According to distraction.gov, "The proportion of fatalities reportedly associated with driver distraction increased from 10 percent in 2005 to 16 percent in 2009." Alarming numbers such as this have made it the American Lawyer Academy, and supporting law firms, priority to help lead the efforts to end distracted driving.

By encouraging students to create viral videos, the dangers of distracted driving will be exposed to more people. All contest supporters hope that by creating videos, they will go viral and raise driver's awareness of the distractions that happen while driving.

The more conscious drivers are of their actions while driving, the less likely they are to become distracted and lose focus of what's important, the road, other drivers and pedestrians.

National contest winners will be announced on June 1st, 2011.
