Personal Injury Tip
Safety Tips for School Zones
Nearly 20% of all traffic fatalities involving children below the age of 15 are due to pedestrian accidents--with most school-age pedestrian victims being killed between the hours of 3 pm to 4 pm. And now that school's back in session--with over 6 million Californian students returning to class--it's important for motorists to take extra precautions while driving in school zones.
Here are six safety tips for driving in school zones that will help you reduce the chance of being involved in an auto-pedestrian accident:
Be VisibleOne of the best ways to prevent an accident is to make your vehicle visible, and this certainly applies to driving through school zones. You should have your headlights on at all times so you can be seen more easily by children and other drivers.
Slow DownThe speed limit in school zones--25 mph when children are present--is there for a reason: you need to be able to stop your vehicle quickly when kids are around. Whenever you're driving through a school zone you should pay close attention to your surroundings, slow down if there are any hazards present and be prepared to deal with the unexpected.
Obey Traffic SignsA recent survey showed that many motorists disregard stop signs in school zones and residential neighborhoods with 45% failing to come to a complete stop, 37% rolling through and another 7% not even slowing down.
This type of behavior increases the likelihood of a car accident and could take away the life of a young innocent child simply walking home from school.
Avoid DistractionsIt's important for you to avoid distractions whenever you're driving, but it becomes especially necessary in school zones. Looking away from the road for only a couple of seconds could cause irreversible damage and unimaginable pain.
Avoid talking on your cell phone, adjusting the sound or air settings in your vehicle or anything else that may take your attention away from driving.
Pay AttentionBeyond avoiding distractions, it is also important to pay careful attention to your surroundings when you are entering and driving through a school zone. Just because you don't see any kids at a quick glance doesn't mean they aren't there.
The strategies I recommend while entering school zones are to ground-check parked cars, constantly scan both sides of the road and look for clues of children in the area (such as backpacks or bikes).
Review Your Travel RouteIf you drive through a school zone on a regular basis, you should either allow extra travel time so you can obey the rules without being concerned about arriving late or you should change your route to avoid school zones. A slightly longer route may actually save you time by avoiding the congestion and having higher speed limits.
By following these six tips you will be more prepared for school-zone safety. Feel free to share this article with your family, friends and co-workers by simply forwarding this newsletter along to their email addresses.

Client Video Testimonial
We've recently created a YouTube account featuring a few of our clients and their video testimonials at http://www.youtube.com/user/BisnarChaseAttorneys.
This month's featured testimonial is Ed Solomon. In 2006, Ed was at his local supermarket when he had a slip and fall accident. Even after visiting the emergency room and being put on painkillers, Ed wasn't sure what his options were, so he turned to BISNAR | CHASE.
After explaining his situation, we took care of all the negotiations (Ed did not have to go to court) and Ed ended up with a generous settlement that was double the original offer from the insurance company.
"I not only would recommend BISNAR | CHASE to anybody that I know, but if anything should unfortunately happen to me I would either be knocking on their door or the hospital would be calling them," said Ed. "They are so professional . . . and it's a good feeling, just a great feeling."

Lawyer Joke: Lawyer On Holiday
A lawyer and an engineer were fishing in the Caribbean.
The lawyer said, "I'm here because my house burned down and all I owned was destroyed by the fire. The insurance company paid for everything and I'm using some of the insurance money for this trip."
"That's quite a coincidence," replied the engineer. "I'm here because my house and all my belongings were destroyed by a flood . . . and my insurance company also paid for everything."
The lawyer looked confused . . . "How do you start a flood?"
