Personal Injury Tip - Brake Maintenance Tips: How to Tell When Something is Wrong!

Your braking system is one the most crucial safety mechanisms in your car. However, most California drivers don't pay attention to the warning signs that signal a problem with their brakes--and because of this they put themselves and others around them at risk of a car accident caused by worn out brakes.

You deserve better.

By paying attention to your braking system you will be able to notice when something is wrong. Whether your brakes are grinding, pulsating, or making a light squeal you should find a solution.

Here are four warning signs:

  • Squealing and Groaning: If your brakes squeal or groan when you are driving faster than 6 miles per hour then it may indicate that your brake pads, calipers, and rotors aren't a good match; your brake pads are worn out; or your brake pads are not properly fitted for your car. In any case, you should take your car to a trusted auto mechanic.
  • Pulling and Vibrations: If your brakes are pulling to one side, it could be unbalanced tire pressure or a problem with your brake caliper. If your tire pressures are fine, then the likely problem is that your brake caliper is sticking, leaking, or not sliding correctly because of corrosion. By fixing your brake caliper, you can increase the life of your brake pads and get better control over your steering.
  • Grinding Noise: Whenever you hear a grinding noise from your car it means trouble--but especially when it comes from your brakes! If you hear a grinding noise you should get off the road as quickly as possible and get your car towed for maintenance right away. The grinding noise from your brakes could be caused by harshly worn brake linings that are pushing against the rotors. And while you may still be safe for a short period of time, any damage to your rotors could be very costly.
  • Soft Pedal: Do you need to press down harder on the brake pedal than you used to in order to come to a complete stop? If so, you may have a problem. A couple possibilities are that air may have got into the brake lines and caused an improper bleeding in the system or that water got in and caused the brake fluid to boil before forming gases in the lines and reducing your stopping power. Regardless, if you have a soft pedal then you should get it checked by an auto mechanic as soon as possible.

If you ever notice an issue with your brakes you should get them checked right away. A problem with your brakes not only puts you in serious risk of getting in a car accident, but it also endangers anybody riding in your vehicle and those around you.

By watching out for these four warning signs you will be able to keep your brakes in great working condition so you can drive safer than before. However, while this list is important to keep in mind it does not in any way represent everything you should watch out for. You should still schedule regular maintenance times with your mechanic and check your brake fluids every 2-4 weeks.

Lawyer Joke--The Lawyer's Debt Repaid

Three very successful men were at the funeral of Joe, a mutual friend. They happened to be viewing the dearly departed at his casket at the same time and started talking.

The first man, an accountant by trade, says "You know, I just remembered I've owed Joe $100 for a long time. I'm going to pay him back now by leaving these two fifty dollar bills in his casket."

The second man, an engineer, not to be outdone by the accountant, says "I've owed Joe $200 for over a year now and so I'm going to leave two one hundred dollar bills in his casket as well."

The third fellow, the lawyer, say to the other two "Funny you should mention that. I owe Joe $500 for something he did for me awhile back and I too want to honor my responsibility. Why don't you each give me the money you owe him and I'll leave him my check for $800 in his casket to cover all three of us?"
