Engine Maintenance Tips: Help Your Car Keep Its Cool In The Summer Heat! (Part 2)
Last month I showed you the top five steps for keeping your vehicle running smoothly during the hot California summer: upgrade your coolant, maintain your cooling fan, check your air conditioning, monitor your battery and change your oil.
While those five tips are imperative for getting your vehicle through the wear and tear of hot weather, there's still much more you can do to beat the heat.
Here are my final five steps to keep your vehicle running safely and smoothly at this time of the year:
- Check Your Tires--Hot weather is the most difficult condition for your vehicle's tires. If your tires have any significant wear, cracks, or other damage you should replace immediately. Beyond that, you should check the air pressure in all the tires including the spare. Underinflated tires are more susceptible to heat and have a much higher risk of blowing out.
- Replace Your Windshield Wipers--Rubber wiper blades typically last no longer than a single year due to extreme weather conditions - hot and cold. Summer sun exposure can cause the rubber to become hard and brittle, leading to streaks and smears on your windshield. If your wipers aren't providing you with a clear view during wet conditions, you should have them replaced.
- Wax Your Exterior--Both the sun and summer smog can cause damage to your vehicle's paint. During your next car wash, you should make sure to have your vehicle waxed or sprayed with a paint protector to shield it from the harm of the sun's ultraviolet rays.
- Get a Sun Shade--Nobody likes getting into a vehicle that is baking inside - so why not get a sun shade for your vehicle so the interior doesn't get so hot when it is parked in direct sunlight? Besides keeping your vehicle at a much more manageable temperature, a sunshade will also protect your vehicle's interior surfaces from fading or cracking.
- Protect Yourself--Lastly, your vehicle will only be as cool as the driver that's in it - so make sure to protect yourself during the hot weather. A few summer time necessities include sunscreen for the arms (especially if you put your arm out the window), sunglasses for the eyes so you can always see well, a baseball cap if you have a convertible, and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated along the way.
There's no secret to keeping cool during the summer, just a lot of common sense. Use these tips to protect yourself and your vehicle from the effects of the weather during the summer months. If you notice a problem, fix it - at the end of the day you'll be more comfortable and more secure.

Lawyer Joke: Entirely Irrelevant
Two women are on a transcontinental balloon voyage. Their craft is engulfed in fog, their compass gone awry. Afraid of landing in the ocean, they drift for days. Suddenly, the clouds part to show a sunlit meadow below. As they descend, they see a man walking his dog.
One of the flyers yells to the figure far below, "Where are we?"
The man yells back, "About a half mile from town."
Seconds later, the balloonists are once again engulfed in the mist. One lady says to the other, "He must have been a lawyer."
The other says, "A lawyer! How do you know that?"
The first says, "That's easy. The information he gave us was accurate, concise, and entirely irrelevant."
