Laguna Niguel Car Accidents See Drop, But Car Accident Deaths Resist Decline

Laguna Niguel in Orange County, California, has a growing population that exceeds 64,000 people, yet the master-planned community, regrettably, has had to deal with a yearly rise in traffic congestion over the last ten years. And that has resulted in a number of Laguna Niguel car accidents.

"Laguna Niguel motorists have, at times, heavily overloaded the city's roads, causing frustrated motorists to get into car collisions," noted car accident attorney John Bisnar, a founding partner of the BISNAR | CHASE law firm. "Heavy traffic along Crown Valley Parkway to Niguel Road, I-5 to Cabot Road, Cabot Road to Greenfield Drive, and Camino del Avion to Marina Hills Drive has caused a number of car accidents."

Laguna Niguel car accident statistics reported by the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) were similar to many South County cities. In 2006, four people were killed and 90 were injured in Laguna Niguel car collisions. Those who got behind the wheel after drinking alcohol caused a number of Laguna Niguel car crashes. These accidents resulted in three fatalities and 16 injuries. Pedestrian accidents in Laguna Niguel resulted in three injuries and bicycle accidents injured four riders. Laguna Niguel motorcycle accidents resulted in two deaths and six injuries.

Due to population growth and commercial and residential developments that spread east of the I-5 Freeway, traffic volume on all major roads saw a sizeable jump. Despite this increase in traffic, Laguna Niguel car collisions dropped by a full 30 percent from their 2003 numbers. In fact, 314 Laguna Niguel car accidents were reported in 2007, yet in 2006, there were 336 accidents. Police Services and Traffic Engineering staff have worked together on traffic field enforcement and street improvement projects to enhance traffic safety.

"When it comes down to fatalities and injuries, Laguna Niguel car accident statistics are a bit uneven." said John Bisnar. "While total car collisions dropped from 446 in 2003 to 314 in 2007, car collision deaths went from three to one and back to four again in the five-year period ending in 2007. Similar results were reported for car accident injuries--which went from 114 in 2003, dipping to 65 in 2005, then climbing back up to 95 in 2007."
