Reducing La Mirada Car Accidents Is Goal of City's Multi-Pronged Effort

Car Accident Statistics Could Be Better

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car accident statistics from 2001 to 2003 reveal that La Mirada had 13 fatal car collisions. This is an average of 2.8 fatal La Mirada car crashes per 10,000 people.

In 2006, the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) revealed that five people were killed and 182 people were injured in La Mirada car crashes. Drunk drivers caused one death and 29 injuries. Pedestrian accidents killed two and injured 13, and bicycle accidents injured eight. In September 2006, a pedestrian was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident at Mulberry Drive and Stamy Road, as reported by the California Highway Patrol. In 2007, five car accidents resulted in five deaths.

Dangerous Area Addressed to Reduce Car Collisions

Earlier, in 2004, residents in the Foster Road area of La Mirada succeeded in efforts to slow down cars speeding through their neighborhood. The city addressed their concerns by approving the installation of a variety of new safety measures. These included new stop signs at accident-prone intersections, five 25-mph speed limit signs, several new school crosswalk warning signs and two new curve-warning signs. These actions were implemented after a comprehensive review of traffic conditions in the Foster Road area. The original review was in response to a series of complaints from concerned area residents.

DUI Checkpoint Keeps Drunks Off Streets

To further reduce car collisions in La Mirada, a number of deputies from the La Mirada Community Sheriff's station conducted a sobriety checkpoint on January 3, 2009. The DUI checkpoint was part of California's Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign designed to keep drunk drivers off city streets. Deputies also asked members of the public to call 9-1-1 to report drunk or unsafe drivers.
