Hemet Car Accidents Linked to Excessive Speed

Hemet car accident lawyers have arrived at the inescapable conclusion that car collisions in the city will occur. The only question is, how many? The city in Riverside County, California is pretty much congested with commuter traffic on weekdays. And freeways are too far away to relieve traffic. The west side is a good 20 minutes away from the 215, and Route 60 via Gilman Springs is about 30 miles east.

Early Hemet Car Accident Statistics are Below Average

Between 2001 and 2003, Hemet suffered 16 fatal car crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Doing the math, that comes to 2.7 fatal car accidents per 10,000 people, which is below average nationally. In 2004, Hemet car crashes injured 428 people and killed seven.

In 2006, the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) indicated that six people lost their lives and 403 were injured in Hemet car collisions. Drunk drivers caused three car crash deaths and 36 injuries. What's more, two pedestrians died and 29 were injured in car collisions. Car crashes also killed one bicyclist and injured 26. Finally, 18 motorcyclists were injured in car accidents. Hemet car collision lawyers decry these tragic statistics.

Pedestrians at Risk for Car Collisions in Hemet

As recently as 2009, Hemet pedestrians were in danger of being struck in car crashes. That year, 17 pedestrians were injured and two died in car accidents--and that was in the first three months. Hemet police subsequently took action, cracking down on motorists who failed to properly yield to pedestrians.

Hemet Police Cite Speeders and DUIs to Prevent Car Crashes

In an effort to reduce the number of drunk driver car collisions, Hemet stepped up its traffic control efforts. The city linked up with Riverside County's Avoid the 30 Sobriety Checkpoint campaign. Enforcement operations for the Winter Holiday DUI Crackdown meant setting up sobriety checkpoints on Friday, December 19, 2008 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Friday, December 26, 2008 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. An additional checkpoint was conducted to launch the city's Memorial Day watch on Friday, May 23, 2008 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

To "put the bite" on traffic violators and reduce car collisions, Hemet Police Officers each write ten to fifteen traffic citations on a daily basis. Roads like State Street and Florida Avenue are long and drivers are often tempted to exceed posted speed limits. Not surprisingly, speeding remains a key factor in most Hemet car crashes. In fact, Hemet car crash lawyers have acknowledged that speeding has caused many tragedies in Hemet.
