Garden Grove Copes with a Variety of Personal Injury Risks

The nearly 200,000 residents of Garden Grove, California -- a city in Orange County -- have experienced have experienced numerous personal injury accidents over the last few years. From hospital mistreatment to drunken driving accidents, being aware of how to deal with the dangerous situations that arise around you is invaluable.

On the Road

Drunk driving accidents are major problem for all of California and Garden Grove is no exception. A 49-year-old man suffered catastrophic brain injury after he was hit by a drunk driver on New Year's Day of 2008. Garden Grove police reported that the accident happened just after midnight when the drunk driver lost control of his vehicle, slammed into a car and various objects on the street, and lastly hit the 49-year-old man who was riding his bike.

Garden Grove bicycle accident lawyers have since brought charges of gross vehicular manslaughter against the defendant, as the victim has since died of complications possibly related to the injuries sustained in the accident.

Garden Grove's streets have seen other catastrophic accidents including the death of a motorcyclist who died after being pursued by the police for reckless driving. During the pursuit, the motorcyclist collided with the officer's car and was thrown from his motorcycle. He died from severe injuries sustained in the motorcycle accident.

Another unfortunate incident involved two people who were critically injured after their van slammed into the side of an OCTA public transportation bus at Lampson Avenue and Euclid Street. The 22-year-old driver and his 14-year-old passenger sustained many broken bones and head injuries and five people on the bus were taken to the local hospital with injuries. It seems the driver of the van was at fault for the bus accident.

Garden Grove Hospital Fined for Endangering Patients

In 2007, Garden Grove Hospital was one of nine California hospitals to be fined $25,000 for not providing a safe enough environment for their patients. The fine was distributed under a new law to make sure hospitals complied with health and safety requirements in order to prevent "serious injury or death to patients."

Garden Grove Hospital was using a powerful anti-nausea drug during rapid detox procedures for patients with opiate dependency although the drug, Droperidol, can cause serious heart irregularities and death. The staff and pharmacy at the hospital said they were not aware of the drug's alleged personal injury risks and did not know that a patient's heart rhythms must be closely monitored when the drug has been administered.

The hospital discontinued use of the drug immediately, explaining that the hospital's mission is "to provide superior health services in a caring environment," and that they did not know their was issue with that drug. One anesthesiologist who had performed the opium rapid detox with Droperidol believes the state was overblown in their actions and that he had never had a problem with small doses of the drug.
