Narrow, Sharply Curved Roads Increase Fallbrook Car Accident Rate
Fallbrook is a small, rural city in San Diego County, but it shares a dubious distinction with many bigger cities--car accidents. While it may not have congested streets or high-speed freeways, it does have long runs over hills and narrow, curvy bends. These can cause hurried drivers distracted by cell phones and coffee cups to swerve out of control and into the path of another car.
"Drivers who live in these rural areas are used to the roads and sometime grow inpatient with drivers new to the area," said John Bisnar." Local drivers often tailgate these 'newbies' causing rear-end car collisions and other accidents."
California Highway Patrol statistics tell the story. In 2007, Fallbrook fell victim to 502 car crashes, resulting in 175 injuries and seven deaths. Running through Fallbrook is the heavily trafficked State Route 76. This route proved especially hazardous with 117 car accidents in 2007--or 23% of all Fallbrook car collisions that year. Thirty four percent of the car crashes on Route 76 resulted in an injury and three percent were fatal.
Coming in a close second in number of car collisions was South Mission Road, with 77 car accidents. Forty-six percent of those Fallbrook car crashes resulted in injury.
"Drivers in these rural areas need to be especially careful when navigating blind intersections," said John Bisnar. "If they can safely do so, drivers should inch forward as they leave the intersection until oncoming traffic and pedestrians are clearly visible. Drivers should never assume that other drivers can see their car."
