Cypress Car Accidents Reduced By Frequent Sobriety Checkpoints

A DUI/Drivers License checkpoint was conducted by the Cypress Police Department on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at Lincoln west of Valley View. A large number of vehicles were checked and drivers who were impaired due to alcohol and/or drugs were arrested.

On one Friday night, over 1,300 drivers were channeled through a sobriety checkpoint on Valley View Boulevard at Phyllis Drive. Police stood on the traffic median and talked to drivers for over six hours. They peered into car windows for drugs, booze and guns. Their message was simple: "Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest." Helping these officers were volunteers from MADD, including Haze Saliture, whose 16-year-old daughter Allison was killed by a drunk driver in 1994.
