Cypress Car Accidents Reduced By Frequent Sobriety Checkpoints

Cypress car accident attorneys have said that car accidents occur regularly in this community of nearly 50,000. A family-oriented community with traffic congestion during commuter rush hours, Cypress in Orange County, California, has set a goal to reduce car collisions.

Cypress Car Accident Statistics Call for Action

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2001 to 2003, four fatal car accidents occurred in Cypress. At 0.9 fatal car crashes per 10,000 people, Cypress car accident statistics were considerably below the national average.

The California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) indicated that in 2006, four people died and 172 were injured in Cypress car collisions. Drunk drivers caused one fatality and 16 injuries. A total of 12 pedestrians and 20 bicyclists were injured in car accidents. Motorcycle collisions caused one death and nine injuries. In 2007, four car crashes caused as many fatalities. But as Cypress car accident lawyers admit, Cypress is no place for drunk drivers.

Drop in Cypress Car Crashes Due to DUI Checkpoints

The city often sets up DUI and Driver's License Checkpoints at various accident-prone intersections and streets. A DUI/Drivers License checkpoint was conducted by the Cypress Police Department on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at Lincoln west of Valley View. A large number of vehicles were checked and drivers who were impaired due to alcohol and/or drugs were arrested.

On one Friday night, over 1,300 drivers were channeled through a sobriety checkpoint on Valley View Boulevard at Phyllis Drive. Police stood on the traffic median and talked to drivers for over six hours. They peered into car windows for drugs, booze and guns. Their message was simple: "Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest." Helping these officers were volunteers from MADD, including Haze Saliture, whose 16-year-old daughter Allison was killed by a drunk driver in 1994. Cypress car crash lawyers applaud groups like MADD who have made the general public much more aware of the dangers of drunk driving.

Multiple Arrests, Fewer Cypress Car Collisions

When it comes to removing impaired drivers from city streets, DUI checkpoints have proven to be a valuable tool. In addition to issuing citations and making DUI arrests, sobriety checkpoints provide an educational service to the general public on the dangers of dunk driving. They also encourage drivers to plan ahead and make them assign a sober designated driver. Few Cypress car collision lawyers will deny that sobriety checkpoints help improve the safety of city streets and highways.
