Compton Car Accidents Blamed on DUIs and Red-Light Violators
One of the most dangerous suburban areas in the country, Compton in Los Angeles County, California has witnessed a decline in housing prices. This has brought many middle-class residents to the city with a corresponding drop in crime. Yet, many Compton car accident attorneys acknowledge that car collisions remain a concern due to motorists who run red lights and those who drink and drive.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2001 to 2003, Compton suffered a total of 26 fatal car crashes. This computes to 2.8 fatal Compton car crashes per 10,000 people, which is below the national norm.
In 2006, the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) revealed that nine people were killed and 359 were injured in Compton car crashes. Bicycle accidents injured 18. In addition, three pedestrians were killed and 27 were injured. Motorcycle accidents killed one and injured 20. DUI motorists caused four deaths and 38 injuries. In 2007, eight car accidents resulted in as many fatalities.
A number of Compton car collision lawyers have noted that red-light cameras can be effective in reducing car accidents. The unblinking camera eyes leave red-light runners very little "wiggle room" to avoid paying are high fine.
To reduce the number of car accidents and injuries, the city installed red-light cameras at several high car accident intersections. Cameras were set up at Alondra and Willowbrook, Compton Blvd. and Wilmington Avenue, and Long Beach Blvd. and Rosecrans Avenue
Compton also implemented another car accident prevention tool--the DUI checkpoint. These were set up during law enforcement's Winter Holiday Mobilization Period--from December 14, 2007 through January 3, 2008; from the Labor Day Mobilization Period of August 17, 2008 through September 3, 2008; and one extra checkpoint set up before September 4, 2008.
Still another pro-active effort was Compton's decision to link up with Los Angeles County's Avoid the 100 DUI Campaign in 2008. The city conducted DUI checkpoints on December 19th, 20th and 23rd. Joining in this effort was the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Compton Station, which conducted several checkpoint operations throughout the city; these consisted of DUI Saturation Patrols in July 2008, in which officers stopped cars, arrested DUI suspects, and verified valid driver's licenses and registrations.
