DUI Checkpoints Help Reduce Chino Car Accidents

Like many inland cities, Chino in San Bernardino County, California has seen considerable growth. Recent statistics place the number of people in the city at nearly 83,000. More people mean more traffic and, sadly, more car crashes. As a number of Chino car accident lawyers have intimated, car collisions in Chino will occur as long as motorists drive while "under the influence."

From 2001 and 2003, Chino experienced 10 car crash fatalities, according to reports gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This worked out to1.5 fatal Chino car crashes per 10,000 people. While this number was lower than the national average, city officials were still alarmed.

The California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) revealed that in 2006, seven people were killed and 439 were injured in car crashes throughout the city. Drunk drivers accounted for two deaths and 46 injuries. Bicycle accidents injured 22, and pedestrian accidents resulted in three deaths and 11 injuries. Motorcycle accidents caused one death and 20 injuries.

In 2007, nine car accidents caused as many deaths in Chino. There was one bright bit of news however. That same year saw a first-time decline in alcohol-related fatalities throughout California since 1998--a drop of 8.3 percent.

Chino accident injury lawyers will tell you that many of the city's car accidents occur because motorists keep getting behind the wheel after they've had too many drinks. To cut down on the number of car collisions, Chino instituted a variety of ongoing measures like DUI checkpoints, which city police conducted regularly at key sites and times.

For example, in 2008, Chino Police Officers conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint in the vicinity of the12000 block of Central Avenue, which began at 9 p.m. on Friday, December 19th. Chino Police linked up with law enforcement agencies from across the state to take part in California's Holiday DUI Crackdown Campaign. On May 5th 2009, a subsequent checkpoint was conducted in search of motorists driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Chino police worked throughout the city that morning, on the alert for weaving cars and impaired drivers.

Chino DUI checkpoints are designed to identify traffic law violators and remove them from city streets. They also serve to educate the public on the dangers of drinking and driving. The goal is to cut down on the tragedies of people killed or injured in alcohol related crashes. Police encourage the public to call 911 and report motorists suspected of driving while intoxicated.
