Truck Accident Attorney Weighs in on Fatal Accident Where the Trucking Company Had a History of Violations
California truck accident lawyer reacts to news of a fatal chain-reaction crash involving 35 vehicles on the Long Island Expressway that killed a woman and left 33 others injured.
According to a Dec. 22 Fox news report, the rig that crashed with the other vehicles and caused the pileup came from a trucking company that had several prior safety violations.
A big rig that crashed with other vehicles and triggered a deadly chain-reaction collision on the Long Island Expressway Dec. 19 belonged to a truck company with a poor safety record, a Dec. 22 Fox news report states.
Jewell Transportation Inc. of Vermont has been cited at least 23 times for unsafe driving since 2011, the report states. Jewell Transportation's fleet trucks have also been involved in several truck accidents, including a fatal crash last July in upstate New York, Fox reports.
In the most recent crash on the Long Island Expressway, the tractor-trailer collided with many other vehicles causing a 35-car pileup, which fatally injured 68-year-old Christina Zepf and left another driver, Robert Murphy, 57, critically injured, the article states. Officials are still looking into what caused the truck accident, Fox reports.
"In such cases, the investigation process is extremely critical in getting to the truth," said John Bisnar, founder of the Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm. "The investigation could take several weeks or even months to get completed. In any truck accident case, especially one where multiple vehicles are involved, it is crucial to get as much physical evidence from the scene as possible."
"There are also other pieces of evidence that are crucial in a truck accident," Bisnar said. "Truck driver logs, vehicle maintenance records, cell phone logs all of this information can prove invaluable when it comes to determining fault and liability in a truck accident case. If these pieces of information are not requested and preserved immediately, they could get lost, misplaced or destroyed."
"Truck accident victims often suffer catastrophic injuries or even fatalities," Bisnar said. "It is important that the at-fault parties, whoever they may be, are held accountable for the significant losses victims and their families sustain," he said.
