Two Injured in Whittier Motorcycle Accident

By Bisnar Chase on September 22, 2011 - No comments

A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were injured in a Whittier car accident after they were struck by a car making a left turn at a street intersection. According to a report in the Whittier Daily News, the serious injury accident occurred at the intersection of Whittier Boulevard and College Avenue in Whittier, the afternoon of September 17, 2011. The man and woman were on the motorcycle when a Honda Accord turned left in front of them. The victims sustained numerous broken bones, cuts and abrasions. It is unclear if the 21-year-old female driver of the Accord will be cited for the crash.

My thoughts and prayers are with the man and woman injured in this motorcycle crash. I wish them both the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 563 were injured in Whittier motorcycle accidents. During that same year, there were 83 fatalities and 2,719 injuries reported as a result of Los Angeles County motorcycle accidents.

What Caused This Serious Injury Accident?

Investigators are trying to determine if the car’s driver failed to yield the right-of-way to the motorcyclist when making a left turn. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Honda is determined to have been at fault, she can be held liable for the serious injuries and damages here. Car accident victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
