By Admin on May 4, 2012 - No comments

According to a recent report in The New York Times, evidence of the harmful effects of chemicals are everywhere around us, although we seldom notice. Scientists are particularly concerned with the family of chemicals that mimic hormones in their effects.

For example, one common herbicide has such strong effects on wildlife that male and female animals may develop secondary characteristics of the opposite sex. These effects are not limited to the flora and fauna of the wild, but may also affect humans.

Philip Landrigan of Mount Sinai School of Medicine notes that the incidents of hypospadias, a congenital defect of newborn male babies that causes displacement of the urethra, is occurring at more than twice the rate of previous years. He blames the surge in this birth defect on endocrine disruptors, chemicals that interrupt the normal function of the endocrine glands. These chemicals are showing up in everything from canned goods to cosmetics, and appear regularly in tested blood and urine of human subjects. Read the rest »

Friends of 38-year-old Jose Luis Arreola are helping his family after Arreola was killed and his 7-year-old daughter Angelica was critically injured in a Los Angeles hit-and-run car accident. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred on April 20, 2012, Arreola, his wife, Erika, and their daughters Anjelica and Adriana, 3, were walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of Santa Ana Boulevard and Watts Avenue. At that moment a Cadillac Escalade SUV sped toward them as it passed another vehicles that was stopped for the pedestrians.

When Arreola saw the SUV, he grabbed his daughter in an effort to protect her. But the SUV drove through the crosswalk and hit them both. Arreola died from his injuries, while Anjelica suffered major head injuries and remains in a coma. The driver apparently stopped briefly, before running over Arreola again as he accelerated away. The suspect was last seen entering into a nearby housing project. Police say the pedestrians absolutely had the right-of-way and that the driver of the SUV was at fault. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run pedestrian accident is asked to call California Highway Patrol officials at 310-516-3355.

Tragedy Strikes Family

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Arreola family for their devastating loss. Not only did the family lose its provider, but they also have a child who is fighting for her life! The Arreola family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Arreola’s colleagues at Green Hills Memorial Park where he fixed sprinklers, mowed laws and helped with burials, are rallying around the family. Employees have scheduled a car wash fundraiser for May 6 at NAPA Auto Parts at 1912 Carson St. in Torrance. The mortuary is also helping the family with Arreola’s burial expenses.
