A driver accused of causing an Orange County car accident, which killed 20-year-old Joseph Quezada, has been charged with felony vehicular manslaughter with a sentencing enhancement for fleeing the scene of the crime. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, 19-year-old Dustin David Lish was drinking with friends the afternoon of November 19, 2011. Prosecutors say Lish’s sister drove him and a friend to a U-Haul facility where Lish worked. The facility manager rented the truck to the two men, but refused to let Lish drive because he was visibly intoxicated. However, Lish got behind the wheel once they were out of sight. He ended up veering into oncoming traffic and sideswiping a Nissan SUV.
Lish continued in the opposing lanes and crashed head-on into a Hyundai Accent driven by Quezada. The impact of the collision pushed the Hyundai back into another vehicle. Quezada died from his injuries. Lish and his friend fled the scene and were found hiding in a vehicle storage area near the scene of the La Habra crash. Lish’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.16 percent, about twice the legal limit, three hours after the crash. If convicted, Lish faces 15 years in state prison.
