Fred Siller, 39, sustained critical injuries in an Anaheim car accident after his motorcycle crashed into another vehicle on the 91 Freeway near Brookhurst Street, The Orange County Register reports. The major injury motorcycle crash occurred the night of February 16, 2010 on the westbound side of the freeway. California Highway Patrol officials said Siller is still listed in critical condition. A 24-year-old motorcyclist who sustained fatal injuries in an Orange County car accident has been identified as David Tanner. The Orange County Register reports that the fatal motorcycle crash occurred the evening of December 29, 2009 at the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and Mac Nab Street when Tanner's Yamaha R1 motorcycle was struck by a BMW sedan, which turned left in front of him. A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a San Diego car accident after he was hit by an SUV on the southbound 15 Freeway in Fallbrook, the afternoon of December 19, 2009. According to a report in The Village News, a 34-year-old man was driving a Honda motorcycle on the freeway when suddenly his motorcycle lost power. He then started changing lanes to move his slowing vehicle over to the right shoulder. It was then that the rear of his motorcycle was struck by a Hummer SUV driven by a 51-year-old woman. The man was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the freeway, which caused his leg to be partially severed. The driver of the Hummer was uninjured. Michael Hughes, 26, was killed in a Riverside car accident after a driver turned in front of him on Highway 62 in Morongo Valley the afternoon of November 11, 2009. According to a news report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Hughes was riding his 2007 Yamaha motorcycle east on the highway near Samel Drive when a man driving a GMC SUV turned ahead of him. Hughes' motorcycle swerved and headed into oncoming traffic. He crashed into a Toyota Sienna and was pronounced dead at the scene. Four people were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. California Highway Patrol officials have determined that alcohol or drugs did not play a part in this fatal car accident.

A 54-year-old man was killed in a San Francisco car accident the afternoon of November 1, 2009 after his motorcycle was struck by a woman who officials say had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit at the time of the crash. According to a news report in the San Jose Mercury News, the driver -- 38-year-old Sherri Lee Chinn -- was also driving with a suspended driver's license and two DUI convictions when she hit the motorcyclist head-on, California Highway Patrol officials said. The man's wife and 7-month-old child were in a black BMW following the Harley Davidson. The child was uninjured, but the woman did sustain minor injuries.

Jeffrey Decker, 50, was killed in a Ventura car accident after his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle, the Ventura County Star reports. An autopsy report determined that Decker had died of blunt force trauma to the head. The fatal motorcycle crash occurred the night of October 23, 2009 when Decker was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Alamo Street in Simi Valley. Decker was involved in a collision with an SUV that was apparently heading north on Cimmaron Avenue, Simi Valley police officials said. Decker was also wearing a helmet. He was transported to a local hospital where he died shortly after the accident. The driver of the SUV, Jennifer Townes was not injured.

The Los Angeles Times has recently reported about the first major study on California motorcycle accidents in 30 years which is underway in Los Angeles. The study is apparently trying to make sense of the recent surge in motorcycle accidents especially in Southern California where year-round good weather encourages motorcyclists to ride more often. Researchers, through this study, will attempt to pinpoint why motorcycle accident deaths have soared over the last 10 years to constitute 14 percent of all traffic accident deaths in spite of the fact that motorcycles account only for 1 percent of vehicle miles traveled.
