Eight people suffered injuries in a boating accident after a powerboat exploded in Huntington Harbour, the morning of November 26, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred on a boat that was headed to Long Beach. Officials say nine people, ranging in age from teens to 50, were on the 26-foot powerboat. The boat was two to three minutes away from the harbor's main public launching ramp when the driver noticed gasoline leaking and told passengers that they should turn back. That was when the engine began sputtering and exploded. The impact from the explosion caused passengers to be thrown into the ocean. Passengers suffered a variety of injuries including broken bones, scrapes and bruises and were transported to area medical centers. Officials are looking into the cause of the explosion.

Five Injured in Huntington Beach DUI Collision
Five people were injured in a Huntington Beach car accident, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury collision occurred near the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Newman Avenue early morning on October 11, 2011. Officials say the driver of a Toyota Camry, identified as 22-year-old Forrest Leland Kelly, was northbound on Beach when he broadsided a southbound Dodge Durango driven by 28-year-old Thomas William Barrett.
The Dodge that had three passengers was making a U-turn at the intersection when the crash occurred. The Dodge overturned and all four occupants were transported to a local hospital with injuries. Kelly was also injured, but was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Huntington Beach police officials at 714-536-5666.
Huntington Beach Hit-and-Run Car Accident Injures Motorcyclist
Police in Huntington Beach are looking for a driver who they say caused a hit-and-run car accident which left a motorcyclist seriously injured. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the serious injury car accident occurred the afternoon of February 24, 2011 in the northbound lanes of Beach Boulevard near Slater Avenue. Police say the 29-year-old motorcyclist was transported to an area trauma center. The other vehicle, described as a Dodge Charge or Magnum-style sedan, did not stop at the scene. Pedestrian Injured in Huntington Beach DUI Hit-and-Run Collision
A 21-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in a Huntington Beach car accident after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver while walking in a marked crosswalk, the afternoon of June 6, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the victim was in a crosswalk at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia Avenue, when a Ford Taurus driven by 59-year-old Richard Elwood Swanson struck him. Police say Swanson left the scene after the collision. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries. Police stopped Swanson as he was driving home to Newport Beach. He was arrested and charged with felony DUI with injury and felony hit-and-run. Read the rest »
Junior Lifeguard Fatally Struck by Boat during Training Exercise
Allyssa Squirrell, a 11-year-old junior lifeguard in the city of Huntington Beach's summer program, died after she was struck by a boat propeller during a routine ocean training exercise off the Orange County coast on July 14, 2009. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, this is the first fatal accident since the city started its junior lifeguard program about 45 years ago.
The incident reportedly occurred when the program's participants were being dropped off in the ocean and then retrieved by a lifeguard boat during what was a regular training exercise. However, Lt. Greg Crow, the driver of the boat and a 32-year veteran, did not see Allyssa in the water and struck her with the boat. The boat's propellers hit the girl and she died of massive cuts to her back and extremities, the Orange County Coroner reported. Read the rest »
