Evan Burns, 14, was fatally injured in a Barstow car accident on August 14, 2011.  The accident happened on California Interstate 40 when Mr. Burns was driving westbound.  His Dodge Dakota drifted and collided with a dirt shoulder.  The truck rolled over and caused his son, Evan, to be ejected from the vehicle.

Evan was rushed to the Loma Lina University medical Center.  He was later pronounced dead.

Matthew M. Cox, 33, of Westwood, tragically lost his life in a rollover accident in Needham, Massachusetts on Wednesday. Cox was traveling south in the left lane on Route 128 (also known as Interstate 95), when he lost control of his 1997 Ford Explorer and veered to the right and struck a guardrail near Exit 19.

The Explorer then crashed and rolled over, ejecting Cox from the driver’s seat.

Cox was not wearing a seatbelt. He was found by rescue crews and was transported to a Needham hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

A 3-year-old girl was seriously injured in an Orange County car accident, which police report, was caused by a reckless driver the afternoon of November 6, 2010. According to a news article in The Orange County Register, the serious injury car accident occurred near the intersection of West Ball Road and South Knott Avenue in Anaheim. Police say that a man in his 20s drove his 2010 black Ford Fusion through three red lights before crashing into a Nissan Altima and a Toyota. The toddler, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Two other adults in the Nissan suffered injuries, the extent of which is not yet known, while two of the Toyota's occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford has not been arrested pending an official investigation.

Dr. Ryan died in a car accident Monday afternoon just west of Malibu, CA. Howard Breuer of People Magazine reports that Dr. Ryan’s tweeting while driving may have caused the accident, based on a claim by Dr. Ryan’s ex-girlfriend, celebrity publicist Charmaine Blake.

Ryan was still alive, but fading fast when authorities arrived at the scene of the crash. Nancy Dillon, West Coast Bureau Chief for NYDailyNews.com, reported the following official statement:

"He suffered severe trauma," Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash said. "Lifeguards got the patient out of the vehicle, placed him on a backboard and started medical work. [But] our medical squad pronounced him dead at the scene, so no helicopter rescue was attempted.

"The dog was ejected from the vehicle and was swimming to shore when rescuers arrived," Nash added.

Dr. Ryan’s dog Jill is reported to have survived the accident and is recovering from serious injuries.

Ricardo Ureno, 19, an Anaheim man, who suffered serious injuries in an Anaheim bicycle accident as a 13-year-old when he was hit by a trash truck, has been awarded $880,000 in damages by an Orange County jury. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the jury voted 9-3 to award the judgment to Ureno. The verdict against disposal company, Taormina Industries includes $122,000 for past medical expenses and more than $65,000 for future medical bills.

The bicycle versus truck accident occurred on November 27, 2002 when Ureno was riding his bike north on Olive Street. As he was crossing the intersection of Sycamore Street, a trash truck driven by Jose Chavez made a right on Sycamore striking the boy. Ureno's attorneys, Ardalan & Associates of Sherman Oaks California, alleged negligence on the part of Chavez because he failed to come to a complete stop before making the right turn. Attorneys for the driver argued that Ureno was the one who lost control of his bicycle and caused the pedestrian accident. However, jurors found that Ureno was not at fault.

Ureno had suffered a broken pelvis in the crash, which left him unable to move and in great pain for several weeks, court records show. Six months after the crash, a blood clot caused severe swelling in his leg leaving a 10-inch surgical scar on his leg. Ureno was also being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. Apparently, the physical and emotional injuries he suffered as a result of this truck crash were so severe that he had trouble getting a job after high school. The jury awarded him $12,500 in past lost earnings and $50,000 in future earnings.

I am extremely glad that this bicycle accident victim received the compensation he deserved.
