OCTA Employee Seriously Injured in Santa Ana Car Accident

An Orange County Transportation Authority employee, who was driving an agency-issued Toyota Prius, was seriously injured in a Santa Ana car accident involving a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury collision occurred in the 200 block of North Harbor Boulevard near First Street the morning of October 5, 2012. Police say a Chevy Tahoe struck the Prius. The woman was extricated from the Prius and transported to an area hospital with major injuries. The driver of the Tahoe was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to this injured OCTA employee who has suffered severe injuries in this collision. I wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. She will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Police Officer Killed in Ventura County DUI Crash

Santa Paula Police Officer Kimberley Hemminger, 33, of Oxnard, was killed in a Ventura County car accident involving a drunk driver. According to a news report in The Ventura County Star, the DUI crash occurred on South Mountain Lookout Road near Coyote Canyon Road near Santa Paula the night of July 22, 2012. Officials say the male driver of a Jeep was traveling too fast and lost control on a curve. The Jeep spun around and rolled over. Hemminger was partially ejected and pinned under the vehicle. Two other female occupants of the Jeep suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was charged with DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Mother and Baby Injured in Riverside Car Accident

A 28-year-old woman and her 10-month-old son were injured in a Riverside car accident when two vehicles collided and veered onto the sidewalk where she was pushing a stroller with her son in it. According to The Press Enterprise, the injury accident occurred along Sycamore Canyon Boulevard near El Cerrito Drive, the afternoon of May 30, 2012. Officials say the driver of a Nissan 300Z was under the influence when he made a right turn and sideswiped a Ford SUV pushing both vehicles into the pedestrian. The two victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital. The 21-year-old driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and other charges.

My thoughts and prayers are with the woman and infant injured in this pedestrian accident. I wish them both the very best for a complete and speedy recovery. It is indeed fortunate that the victims did not sustain critical injuries here.

Los Angeles DUI Collision Proves Fatal for Teen

Christopher Rivera, 19, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident when a suspected drunk driver struck his disabled car. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, the fatal DUI collision occurred on the eastbound 105 Freeway in South Los Angeles during the early morning hours of May 29, 2012. Officials say Rivera was driving a 2007 Honda Civic that broke down. Moments later, Rivera’s disabled car was struck by a 2006 Nissan Sentra. Mark A. Urbina, 22, was able to escape his Nissan with only minor injuries before it caught fire, while Rivera was unconscious when he was extricated from the Civic. He succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Urbina was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and officials say he is likely to face gross vehicle manslaughter charges.

Mother and Two Children Killed in Los Angeles DUI Collision

Lynze Martinez, 30, and her children, Brianna Martinez, 7, and Loryana Martinez, 3, were fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say may have involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the DUI collision occurred at the intersection of Mona Boulevard and 119th Street in the Willowbrook area of Los Angeles County, the morning of May 28, 2012. Officials say 24-year-old Oscar Angues was turning left in a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe when a speeding 2001 Cadillac driven by 32-year-old Jason Steward, struck his vehicle. The impact overturned the Tahoe injuring its five occupants, who included Martinez and her two children.

Loryana Martinez sustained fatal head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Brianna Martinez was ejected from the Tahoe and suffered fatal head injuries. Lynze Martinez was ejected from the vehicle as well and succumbed to her injuries at a nearby medical center. Angues and the 1-year-old brother of the young girls killed in this accident suffered moderate injuries. Steward attempted to flee the scene, but was arrested shortly afterward and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Man Dies from Injuries Suffered in Riverside DUI Collision

Jonathan Maxwell of Ohio died from injuries he suffered in a Riverside car accident, which officials say was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a news article in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal car accident occurred on May 16, 2012 on La Cadena Drive East in Highgrove. Nathan Wendall Williams, 21, was driving a white BMW sedan when he failed to negotiate a curve, crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and collided head-on with a Cadillac driven by Mark Shaffer. Maxwell, who was a passenger in the Cadillac, died from his injuries. Shaffer and another passenger, Ashley Kilgore, suffered injuries as well. Williams was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or more.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Jonathan Maxwell for their tragic loss. My heart also goes out to Shaffer and Kilgore, who have been injured in this collision. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
