Sarah Leaf, 29, was killed in a bicycle accident in Newport Beach after a stake-bed truck hit her, the morning of September 14, 2012. According to a news report in Corona del Mar Today, the fatal traffic accident occurred at the intersection of East Coast Highway and Bayside Drive. Police say Leaf was riding her bike on East Coast Highway and was preparing to make a right onto Bayside, when the truck driver, who was traveling in the same direction, attempted a right turn, struck and ran her over. Leaf died from her injuries. No arrests or citations have been reported yet.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew and loved Sarah Leaf. She was apparently a certified nutritionist at a local fitness center and spa. This is indeed a tragic incident! I offer my deepest condolences to her family members and friends.

Proposed New Law Could Help Prevent Bicycle Accidents in California

By John Bisnar on August 23, 2012 - No comments

A new law in California, if passed, could make two-lane highways safer for bicyclists by potentially preventing serious injury bicycle accidents. According to a news report in The Lake Elsinore Patch, California’s SB 1464, which is also known as the “Three Feet for Safety Act,” would require motorists to give bicyclists a 3-foot clearance when passing. In cases where it is not possible to give such a clearance, motorists would be required to slow down to a speed that is “reasonable and prudent.” Under this proposed law, drivers can also move into oncoming traffic to provide the 3-foot clearance, provided it is safe to do so. Motorists would be fined $35 for a violation of the 3-foot clearance law. If a bicyclist is injured due to a violation, the fine will go up to $220.

By John Bisnar on June 20, 2012 - No comments

Brittany Gunnell, 20, was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident when a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer hit her bicycle. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, the bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of 77th Street and Emerson Avenue in Westchester, the night of June 11, 2012. Officials say Gunnell wasn’t wearing a helmet when the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer struck her. She suffered severe head trauma and underwent surgery for a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain. Officials have not stated who was at fault for the crash or if they will issue any citations for driver negligence.

My heart goes out to Brittany Gunnell and her family following this terrible car accident. Her mother Denise O’Brien has posted messages on Facebook asking everyone to pray for her daughter. Many who know Gunnell, including former classmates, teachers, friends and community members held a prayer service for the aspiring actress and UC Berkeley student. The accident occurred as Gunnell was returning from a rehearsal for “Annie” at the Westchester Townhouse. Gunnell and her family will certainly be in my prayers. I wish her the very best for a complete recovery.
