Man Killed in Sylmar Car Accident

By John Bisnar on August 2, 2012 - No comments

Harry Dourian, 84, was killed in a Los Angeles area car accident after his vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed. According to a City News Service report, the fatal rollover crash occurred in the 12300 block of San Fernando Road the early morning of August 1, 2012. Los Angeles police say Dourian’s car was headed southwest when it went off the roadway, hit a wall, damaged a parked car and overturned. Dourian was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends of Harry Dourian for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Crash Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries involving Los Angeles car crashes. During the same year, 554 people died and 50,817 were injured as a result of car accidents in Los Angeles County as a whole.

What Caused This Crash?

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to why this fatal rollover crash occurred. There are several unanswered questions here. Did an auto defect or mechanical malfunction cause or contribute to this rollover accident? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have led to the incident? Were any other vehicles involved in this crash? Did the elderly driver suffer a medical condition? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

In this particular case, the victim’s family would be well advised to preserve the vehicle in its current condition unaltered so it can be thoroughly examined for defects, malfunctions and other evidence. If a dangerous roadway caused the incident, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable. Please remember that any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the incident. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer can better advise victims or their families in such cases about their legal rights and options.
