Brian Chase, one of the nation’s leading personal injury attorneys and auto defects experts was honored as one of the Orange County Trial Brian Chase HonoredLawyers Association’s 50 past presidents during an awards gala on Jan. 26 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

Brian Chase of Bisnar | Chase personal injury law firm was honored during the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association’s (OCTLA) 50th Anniversary celebrations on Jan. 26 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

Chase is one of the group’s 50 past presidents in addition to being named one of their Top Guns – Product Liability Trial Lawyer in the year 2004. During the gala event, OCTLA had a special tribute for its 50 past presidents during which Chase was honored.

According to OCTLA’s website, the group was formed in 1963 when a few plaintiffs’ attorneys got together to share information about the challenges they were facing and to exchange various tips and strategies to cope with those challenges. OCTLA is a professional organization, which aims to provide superior education and training for attorneys, serves as a resource to trial attorneys in Orange County and support legislation that protect the public’s access to the civil justice system.

OCTLA is governed by an elected board of directors and executive officers that include the president, president-elect, vice presidents, treasurer, parliamentarian and immediate past president. Officers and board members are elected for a one-year term. OCTLA has been quick to recognize and honor its own members many of whom are distinguished trial attorneys who have won nationwide acclaim for their work as outstanding trial lawyers.

Brian Chase is a native of Southern California, a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, a graduate of Pepperdine School of Law and a personal injury trial attorney for two decades. He has litigated dozens of jury trials and has represented both local and national auto product liability and catastrophic injury cases, obtaining judgments and settlements exceeding $100 million.

In 2012, he won the Consumer Attorneys of California’s (CAOC) prestigious “Attorney of the Year” award for his representation in an auto defects case where a jury awarded victim Jaklin Romine $24.7 million for a defective car seat that rendered her a quadriplegic.

Brian Chase, Scott Ritsema of Bisnar|Chase Win Consumer Attorneys of the Year

By Brian Chase on November 12, 2012 - No comments

Brian Chase and Scott Ritsema win Consumer Attorneys of the Year award at CAOC 51st Annual Convention for a case involving woman rendered a paraplegic after an improperly designed car seat collapsed in a crash.

Brian Chase and Scott Ritsema, personal injury attorneys of Newport Beach law firm Bisnar | Chase are Consumer Attorneys of California’s 2012 Attorneys of the Year.

The announcement was made at the awards dinner Saturday night as part of CAOC’s 51st Annual Convention at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The award is given to recognize a plaintiff’s lawyer who achieved a significant result in a case that assisted consumers or changed consumer law for the better in California and was finally resolved between May 15, 2011, and May 15, 2012.

Chase and Ritsema were selected as Consumer Attorneys of the Year for their work holding the  manufacturer of a defective product accountable for the serious injuries of a woman who was left  a paraplegic after a vehicle crash. In Romine v. Johnson Controls, Inc.,

Bisnar and Chase  represented Jaklin Romine, who was properly seat belted when she was rear-ended at a Pasadena intersection while waiting to make a left turn. Her seat collapsed rearward and she was thrown into the back seat, breaking her neck and back.

Chase and Ritsema presented evidence that the seat, designed by Johnson Controls, was too weak to withstand foreseeable rear impacts, thus subjecting occupants to catastrophic risks.

They also showed the company had been well aware of the dangers and risks of weak seats since the 1990s. Johnson Controls had actually developed a design that was more structurally sound to prevent seats from collapsing in accidents such as this but chose to put profits ahead of people.

Consumer Attorneys of California is a professional organization of plaintiffs’ attorneys representing consumers seeking accountability against wrongdoers in cases involving personal injury, product liability, environmental degradation and other causes.
