Woman Critically Injured in Orange County Car Accident

A 23-year-old female pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries in an Orange County car accident, which involved three vehicles. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury car versus pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Sunflower and Stevens avenues in Costa Mesa the morning of November 30, 2010.

Police say a 17-year-old male, who was driving west on Sunflower, ran a red light at the intersection and hit two vehicles. The pedestrian, who was standing at the corner, was struck by flying debris from the vehicles. The woman sustained severe head trauma and was transported to a local hospital. None of the drivers was injured. No citations have been issued pending an official investigation.

My heart goes out to this seriously injured pedestrian and her family members for what they are going through at this time. I pray that this victim makes it through these injuries and makes a complete recovery. She and her family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were six fatalities and 785 injuries involving Costa Mesa car accidents. In Orange County as a whole, 152 people died and 13,414 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Red Light Running

Based on this news report, the teen driver ran a red light and triggered the chain-reaction car accident at this intersection. Running a red light is a serious traffic violation under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: "A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown."

Fault and Liability

If the young driver is determined to have been at fault here, he could be held liable for the accident and the serious injuries caused to the pedestrian. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
