San Diego Car Accident Injures Motorcyclist

By Personal Injury Lawyer on December 26, 2009 - No comments

A motorcyclist was seriously injured in a San Diego car accident after he was hit by an SUV on the southbound 15 Freeway in Fallbrook, the afternoon of December 19, 2009. According to a report in The Village News, a 34-year-old man was driving a Honda motorcycle on the freeway when suddenly his motorcycle lost power. He then started changing lanes to move his slowing vehicle over to the right shoulder. It was then that the rear of his motorcycle was struck by a Hummer SUV driven by a 51-year-old woman. The man was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the freeway, which caused his leg to be partially severed. The driver of the Hummer was uninjured. The motorcyclist was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

My heart goes out to this injured motorcyclist who has apparently suffered severe leg injuries. I hope he recovers completely from his injuries. Please keep him in your prayers.

Motorcycle Accidents in San Diego

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 50 fatalities and 985 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in San Diego County. Countywide, car accidents claimed 268 lives and injured 14,641 people during the same year.

Accident Causes and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that there was some type of malfunction or mechanical problem with the Honda. The motorcycle in this case should be thoroughly examined by an expert for malfunctions, vehicle defects and other evidence. I trust officials are also looking into whether the driver of the Hummer was negligent here. Did she fail to observe the motorcyclist slowing down? Was she distracted or careless?

In cases where victims suffer serious injuries as a result of an auto product defect or a driver's negligence, they could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy and other damages. In this case, if the motorcyclist's leg is amputated and he cannot return to work, he can also claim loss of future earnings. An experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer will stay abreast of the investigation, analyze all aspects of this case and make sure that the victim receives fair compensation for his injuries, damages and loss.
