An 85-year-old man was fatally injured in a Riverside car accident after he was hit by a vehicle the night of April 10, 2010. The Desert Sun reports that the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Ramon Road and Desert View Drive. The driver who struck the man left the scene of the accident. Police are asking for the public's help to identify this hit-and-run driver. Officials describe the suspect vehicle as a white, newer model pickup truck with front-end damage. If you saw this collision, or, if you have any information about the vehicle or driver, please call police at 760-323-8115.
My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this man. To lose a loved one in this manner is truly tragic and devastating. Please keep this grieving family in your prayers.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
There were two fatalities and 12 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Palm Springs, according to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Riverside County as a whole, 30 people died and 338 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents in 2008.
Hit-and-Run Law
Leaving the scene of a crash or hit-and-run is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
In this particular case, it is not clear exactly where the victim was walking at the time of the collision. However, irrespective of whose fault this collision was, the driver was required to remain on the scene and provide assistance to the victim. I hope this hit-and-run driver is found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Liability Issues
In such cases, the families of victims would be well-advised to contact a reputed Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help them pursue their rights. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their car insurance policy applies to a hit-and-run crash or in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
