A man was killed in a San Bernardino pedestrian accident after he was hit by a big rig on a Fontana street. The Press-Enterprise reports that the accident occurred the morning of February 10, 2010 in the 15100 block of Washington Street. Police said no one saw the collision take place. However, investigators were able to determine that he was hit by a big rig based on tire tracks. The deceased man was found lying on the street. People apparently noticed him because of the glow from a flashlight the victim carried with him. If you saw this crash or have any information, please call 909-350-7700.
I offer my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved this victim. His family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
There were three fatalities and 41 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Fontana, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, 50 fatalities and 432 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in 2007.
Leaving the Scene of an Accident
I hope that the hit-and-run driver, in this case possibly a big rig driver, is apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Hit-and-run or leaving the scene of a crash is a serious crime in California, under California Vehicle Code section 20001. In fact, motorists who are involved in accidents are required to stop, provide assistance to the injured victim and exchange important information such as auto insurance, contact and driver's license. In this case, whoever hit this victim did none of the above.
An Experienced Injury Lawyer Can Help
In such cases, it would be in the best interest of victims' families to get in touch with a reputed California personal injury lawyer who will stay on top of the investigation and make sure that their legal rights are protected. If it is determined that the big rig driver caused the accident, then his employer can also be held liable for the victim's wrongful death.
