Orange County Man Dies of Injuries Sustained in Car Accident
December 6th, 2009 | ToniKeun Park, 57, died this week from the major injuries he suffered in a Los Angeles car accident on November 13, 2009. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Park was driving a 2000 Honda Accord on the 5 Freeway southbound near Paramount Boulevard in Santa Fe Springs, when for an unknown reason he turned to the left hitting the metal guard rail. California Highway Patrol officials said the impact from the crash caused the Honda to go out of control and into the traffic lanes. The Honda was then hit from behind by a 2008 GMC Yukon causing the car to spin across the number one lane and be struck again by an Acura Integra. Park was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries. Two others were also transported to a hospital with moderate injuries.
I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Keun Park for their terrible loss. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Park. Please keep them in your prayers.
Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics
According to CHP's 2007 traffic accident statistics, five people died and 381 were injured as a result of car accidents in Santa Fe Springs. In Los Angeles County as a whole, car accidents claimed 718 lives and caused 56,475 injuries in 2007.
Based on this newspaper report, it is not clear what caused Park to lose control of his Accord and crash into the guardrail in the first place. The article does not mention that Park was impaired, or if he suffered a medical condition or that he fell asleep at the wheel. There are always a few questions that arise in these types of collisions. Was there a vehicle defect in the Honda, which may have caused Park to lose control and crash? Was there another vehicle involved in this crash? Did another vehicle cut him off causing him to turn left and slam into the metal divider? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway such as debris, which caused him to make that sudden movement and set off this chain reaction car accident? I trust investigators are looking into these and other issues that may be related to this incident.
Liability Issues in Car Accidents
In such cases, it would be in the best interest of the victim's family to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will follow up with the official investigation and help determine whether there was any negligence involved. If this was caused by an auto product defect, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product could be held liable for the accident.
If this crash was caused by debris on the freeway, the individual or entity that dropped the debris could be held responsible. If another negligent driver caused this car accident, that individual could also be held liable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will be able to sort these issues out for the victim's family and also help them understand how their car insurance policy would apply to such an accident.
