A 24-year-old motorcyclist who sustained fatal injuries in an Orange County car accident has been identified as David Tanner. The Orange County Register reports that the fatal motorcycle crash occurred the evening of December 29, 2009 at the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and Mac Nab Street when Tanner's Yamaha R1 motorcycle was struck by a BMW sedan, which turned left in front of him. Tanner was ejected from his motorcycle and then run over by a Ford Mustang.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of David Tanner for their devastating and sudden loss. I offer my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved this man. This family will certainly be in my prayers.

There were 34 injuries in Garden Grove, California, as a result of motorcycle accidents in 2007, according to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics. Based on this newspaper report, it seems to me that the driver of the BMW did not yield right-of-way to the motorcyclist who was going right through the intersection. According to California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a): "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."
