An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving four vehicles. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car accident occurred on Grand Avenue near Longview Drive, in Diamond Bar, the afternoon of February 25, 2010. Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say the chain-reaction crash was triggered by a head-on collision between two vehicles traveling in opposite directions on Grand. Two other vehicles then crashed into the wreckage.
An injured driver of a pickup truck was transported to a regional hospital in critical condition. Two adults and a teenager in a larger pickup truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one was injured in the fourth vehicle. Officials have not cited or arrested anyone pending an investigation.
I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the police officer killed in this crash. Officials say she was in her 30s. Please keep her grieving family in your prayers. I also wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not clear which one of the vehicles was involved in the initial head-on collision. The first issue to determine here would be: Who caused that collision and why? Did impairment, distraction, speeding or any other form of negligence play a part in this fatal car crash?
If I were a member of the deceased police officer's family or the critically injured victim's family, I would get in touch with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and help protect their legal rights and best interests. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition on the roadway caused or contributed to this fatal car accident. If that was the case the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could also be held liable. Please remember that any claim against a governmental agency in California must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
