Amanda Dias, 19, and 25-year-old Iva Adriano were both injured in a car accident the afternoon of May 26, 2010. According to the Roseville Press-Tribune, Dias was driving her Honda Civic north on Industrial Avenue near Athens Avenue, in Roseville, when for an unknown reason, she turned left directly in front of a Dodge Intrepid driven by 25-year-old Iva Adriano, who was traveling east on Athens. The Intrepid struck the left side of Dias' car. Dias and two of her passengers suffered major injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Adriano sustained moderate injuries and was also hospitalized. Police say alcohol or drugs don't seem to have been a factor.
My heart goes out to all the injured victims in this car accident. I hope no one suffered catastrophic injuries and pray that they recover quickly and completely. Please keep them in your prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were five deaths and 587 injuries involving car accidents in Roseville in 2008. In Placer County as a whole, 22 people died and 1,418 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Laws Relating to Left Turns
Based on this news report, it is not entirely clear why Dias turned in front of the other vehicle at the intersection. California law is very specific about the requirements for drivers making a left turn or a U-turn. California Vehicle Code section 21801 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."
Fault and Liability
If Diaz is determined to have been at fault for failing to yield right-of-way at the intersection, then she could be held liable not only for injuries caused to the other driver, but also for the serious injuries that her two passengers suffered here. In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Sacramento personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the accident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. Injured victims whose injuries have been caused by someone else's negligence can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, costs involving hospitalization and treatment, and other related damages.
