Roberto Santana, 50, was critically injured in a car accident in Woodland after the vehicle in which he was a passenger, was struck by an out-of-control vehicle. According to a news report in the Daily Democrat, Santana was traveling in a car driven by 63-year-old Alfonso Gonzalez on State Route 113 near County Road 25A, the afternoon of November 7, 2010.
At the time, a 2003 Honda driven by 20-year-old Enrique Rodriguez crashed through the median and hit the left side of Gonzalez's 2004 Toyota. Rodriguez and his passenger were uninjured. But Gonzalez and his 62-year-old wife, Maria, were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Rodriguez told authorities that his car veered to the right and then went out of control on the slick roadway. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to Santana and the Gonzalez family for what they are going through at this time. I wish all the injured victims here the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two fatalities and 133 injuries involving car accidents in Woodland, California. In Yolo County as a whole, 24 people died and 767 sustained personal injuries as a result of car accidents during the same year.
What Caused This Car Accident?
Based on this news report, it is not quite clear why Rodriguez lost control of the Honda. Was he under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs? Was he traveling at an unsafe speed given the roadway conditions at the time? Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in his Honda, which may have caused or contributed to the car accident? Was Rodriguez, distracted, inattentive or driving recklessly at the time? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.
Fault and Liability
If Rodriguez is determined to have been at fault in the accident, then he could be held liable for the serious injuries caused to the victims. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. An experienced California personal injury lawyer will be able to better advise car accident victims about their legal rights and options.
