Man Arrested in Fatal Newport Beach Hit-and-Run Crash - Bisnar | Chase Urges Community Involvement

Newport Beach personal injury law firm Bisnar | Chase encourages communities to join hands with local law enforcement and help apprehend hit-and-run drivers. Recent news reports show that a number of hit-and-run accidents in Southern California remain unsolved.

The Newport Beach personal injury lawyers at Bisnar | Chase continue to urge local communities to partner with their local police departments with the common goal of eradicating hit-and-run accidents. According to a Sept. 18 report in The Orange County Register, Newport Beach police arrested 39-year-old Michael Jason Lopez of Anaheim in connection with a hit-and-run bicycle accident in Newport Beach that killed prominent doctor Catherine Campion-Ritz.

The report states that the 57-year-old physician was riding her bike on Newport Coast Drive between Ocean Vista and Vista Ridge Drive the morning of Sept. 15, when she was rear-ended by a black pickup truck. The pickup's driver fled without rendering aid to the critically injured Campion-Ritz. Lopez was arrested on Sept. 18 and has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

"I offer my deepest sympathies not only to Dr. Campion-Ritz's family members, but also the members of her community who loved and respected her," said John Bisnar, founder of Bisnar | Chase and the Hit-and-Run Reward Program.

Bisnar | Chase's Hit-and-Run Reward Program offers a $1,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and felony conviction of hit-and-run drivers. These anonymous tips may be provided through the WeTip crime hotline, 800-6-Hit-N-Run (800-644-8678).

"In this case, someone came forward with that precious tip and helped Newport Beach police apprehend the hit-and-run driver," said Bisnar. "Although victims' families continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones, knowing that the driver is in police custody and that he or she will be brought to justice gives them the sense of closure that they desperately seek during these tough times."

Hit-and-run collisions are only increasing in California, according to a Sept. 14 article in Examiner.com that gives an account of at least three unsolved hit-and-run cases from 2011 in the Los Angeles area. One of those collisions was fatal and two involved severe injuries.

"In hit-and-run crashes, there is no one to hold accountable," Bisnar says. "It is the victim and his or her family who are left paying significant medical expenses as they struggle financially and emotionally not knowing who caused their suffering."

Bisnar believes that initiatives such as Hit-and-Run Reward Program, which allows citizens to offer tips anonymously, will help send out a loud and clear warning to drivers who contemplate leaving the site of a crash. "Most drivers probably have a moment of indecision where they are wondering if they should take off or stay. Knowing that there's a program where people have the ability to turn you in anonymously should persuade drivers to remain at the scene."
